Rongotai ➡️Wellington Bays
The Rongotai electorate is turning into Wellington Bays at this year’s election.
The new name and boundary changes are the result of shifts in population and are required to keep the country’s electorates a similar size.
The electorate is expanding to include Mt Cook and parts of Brooklyn.
The old Wellington Central electorate is also changing. It’s losing Mt Cook and parts of Brooklyn and adding Wadestown, Ngaio, and Khandallah. Its name is changing to Wellington North.

For what it’s worth, I still much prefer the name our electorate has had since it was set up in 1996. Officially, the electorate will be known as Wellington Bays but it will always be Rongotai to me.
Who can vote?
You’re eligible to enrol and vote if you are 18 years or older, a New Zealand citizen or resident for electoral purposes, and you’ve lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more at some time in your life.
In other words, you're a resident for electoral purposes if you’re living in New Zealand lawfully and you're not required to leave within a specified time.

Important dates
- Māori roll choice closes 6 August
- Overseas voting starts 21 October
- Updates and new enrolments close 25 October
- Advance voting starts 26 October
- Election Day (voting from 9 am to 7 pm) 7 November
